About Comoros
The Comoros is a volcanic island nation in the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Madagascar. The Union of the Comoros consists of three main islands (Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Mohéli), while a fourth, Mayotte, is claimed by the Comoros but administered by France.
Historically important for Indian Ocean trade, the islands feature African, Arabic, Malagasy, and French cultural influences. Sunni Islam, established during the Shirazi sultanates, is the dominant religion. The islands came under French rule in the late 19th century, became an overseas territory in 1947, and three of them gained independence in 1975.
The capital and most populous urban area is Moroni. The total population is approximately 937,304, with a high growth rate and about two-fifths under age 15. More than two-thirds live in rural areas: roughly half reside on Grande Comore, two-fifths on Anjouan, and less than one-tenth on Mohéli.
